Fortuitous Happenstance

Angry Old Man
This amazing photograph was reproduced in photogravure in a series of ‘Pictorial Encyclopedias’ in the 1930s. You are looking at microscope art as each of those blobs is an insect egg, deliberately arranged in a pattern. For the etymologists among you, the large central egg is of the Red Underwing Moth, it is surrounded by the fluted eggs of the Swallowtail Moth and the long white eggs on the outside of the group were laid by the Common House Fly.
